Objectives:

After attending this session, you will have a better understanding of:

  • Learn about the importance of oral health for children with special health care needs (SHCN), barriers to access care, and resources to improve care

  • Understand policies, guidelines and strategic framework for improving the oral health of children with SHCN

  • Learn about community-clinical linkages to establish a dental home

Prasida Khanal Bio: Serves as the State Oral Health Director at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). She obtained her Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree from Nepal and graduated Master of Public Health with honors in the US. Prasida completed a dental public health residency from Eastman Institute for Oral Health, University of Rochester Medical Center, New York. As a servant leader, Prasida is committed to strengthening partnerships between communities and health systems to achieve and sustain positive population-level health outcomes. She has built the capacity and infrastructure for the statewide Early dental Disease Prevention Initiative at the intersection of community and clinical health, emphasizing social determinants of health.

Cris Gilb Bio: Her more than 40-year healthcare career has included direct patient care and administrative positions in acute care and public health in Southwest Minnesota. She has devoted her time in the last ten years to oral health strategies for underserved children, working with the Minnesota Oral Health Project, Early Childhood Dental Network, and the Minnesota Oral Health Coalition.

Monisha Washington-Richard Bio: Recognized the gap in care and disparities that exist in her community which led her to transition from being a chairside dental assistant to become a Community Health Worker. She founded The LinC consulting to utilize her unique background to train CHW's and organizations on the importance of assessing barriers, building trust and authentically engaging underserved communities in health and wellness.
